Green Infrastructure Access for All

New 3 metre wide path with an open curved corner to increase visibility for users, replacing a small overgrown path.

Project details

The Green Infrastructure Access for All project aimed to significantly improve access to the Norfolk Trails network for a broad range of users, including young families, less confident walkers, people with mobility limitations and power or wheelchair users. This was achieved through a series of thoughtful and strategic small-scale interventions which together have a significant impact on accessibility and inclusivity.

Four sub-projects were delivered as part of the initiative:

  • Marriott's Way - Costessey Curve:Replaced a small overgrown path on a tight corner with a 3-metre wide, open sweeping corner that has more visibility allowing users to clearly see each other from both directions. Work also included resurfacing and the installation of new stairs to support walkers accessing the road below.
  • Marriott's Way - Brick Kiln Steps:Installed a new wider stair set with consistent step height and double handrails to support users access the Marriott's Way from Brick Kiln Lane.
  • Wherryman's Way - Signage and infrastructure improvements:Installed various pieces of new infrastructure along 4 circular walks around the Wherryman's Way long distance trail. Infrastructure included 39 finger posts, 3 kissing gates, 8 waymarker posts, 2 footbridges and 2 benches, all helping access and use of the trail.
  • Wherryman's Way - Rockland St Mary: Resurfaced 900 metres of footpath at Rockland St Mary, reinstating the full width of the path and passing places, increasing accessibility for users.

This project was made possible by funding from the Greater Norwich Growth Board, Norfolk Trails, and Greenways Infrastructure teams, who collectively recognise the importance of delivering initiatives that allow everyone to access green infrastructure in their local communities. Delivery of this project supports the strategic priorities of Greater Norwich: addressing deficiencies in accessible greenspace provision and strengthening the network of greenways to support active travel.

The improvements have been very positively received, particularly by the local parishes, who have welcomed the enhancements as a solution to long-standing access and safety concerns. The upgrades have significantly increased the usability of these trails. Notably, the resurfacing at Rockland St Mary and the installation of new access points have made the routes more accessible to a broader range of users, which have resulted in a substantial uplift in usage.
