FDC Bowthorpe
Project details
The Football Development Centre (FDC) Bowthorpe 3G Pitch Project offered the Greater Norwich Growth Board (GNGB) an opportunity to enhance a key community sports facility in a growing part of the city. The £250,000 from the GNGB's Infrastructure Investment Fund helped to lever in over £721,040 in match funding from the Norfolk FA and the Football Foundation. This investment enabled the project to replace the existing natural grass pitch with a full-sized 3G artificial surface.
FDC Bowthorpe, located within the Norwich Urban Area and earmarked in the Greater Norwich Local Plan for a strategic urban extension of around 900 homes, serves as a vital community sports hub. It is the main training base for Costessey Sports' 28 teams and supports 13 other local clubs, alongside hosting Norfolk's largest Walking Football programme and a weekly NHS-backed mental health inclusion session. With local housing growth driving club expansion, demand for pitch access has exceeded capacity - making the upgrade to a full-sized 3G surface essential to meet rising community needs.
Beyond sport, the centre supports a Further Education programme with the Access sport college, enabling 16-19-year-olds to combine academic study with football training and competition. Students pursue Level 2 and 3 Diplomas in Sport, gaining qualifications and experience that prepare them for higher education or careers in the sport and leisure sector.
The project directly supports the objectives outlined in the Greater Norwich Playing Pitch Strategy, particularly by maintaining and enhancing the quality of artificial grass pitches to ensure they remain fit for purpose, and by promoting the development of hub sites where both junior and senior clubs can grow and progress in a more structured and sustainable way.
The project has dramatically increased the site's capacity, boosting annual 11-a-side matches from 50 to 300 and enabling new off-season tournaments and weekday recreational football from 5-10pm. Extended opening hours (7 days a week) have created full-time, part-time, and casual jobs. The upgraded pitch now supports 4 women's teams, 6 girls' teams, disability sessions, and inclusive programmes like the Superhero League and the Norwich City Community Sports Foundation girls' programme. Overall, it has strengthened community ties, promoted inclusion, and improved long-term sustainability through greater engagement and revenue.
