Eaton Interchange

The new traffic signals and advanced cycle stop line in Eaton.

Project details

This project delivered a series of transport enhancements in Eaton with the aim of making it easier and safer to travel around by bicycle, on foot, and by bus, creating a better travel experience for all those travelling through the area. The scheme was delivered in Summer 2018 to complement works that had been undertaken in Cringleford the previous year to improve pedestrian access between the neighbouring areas.

Works included:

  • Widening the cycle trackfrom 1.5m to 3m between the Cellar House pub and Newmarket Road, allowing more space for safer two-way cycle flow.
  • Resurfacing the carriageway and upgrading the junction with new traffic signals to improve efficiency and reduce delays.
  • Reducing traffic speeds through traffic calming and the introduction of a 20mph speed restriction, to create a safer environment for those walking, wheeling and cycling.
  • Installing new advanced cycle traffic signals enabling those cycling to be able to travel through the junction safely ahead of general traffic.
  • Providing an on-carriageway cycle feeder lane approaching the crossroads on Eaton Street, allowing those cycling to be separated from vehicular traffic.
  • Creating an advanced cycle stop line providing a safer place for those cycling to wait before using the advance cycle traffic signal at the junction.
  • Moving the vehicle stop line back in Bluebell Road so buses and other large vehicles can turn left from Eaton Street more easily, minimising delays to all road users.

The project was made possible through grant funding from the Department for Transport's Cycle City Ambition Grant, Local Growth Fund and the Greater Norwich Growth Board's (GNGB) Infrastructure Investment Fund. The GNGB supported this project because they recognised the importance of enhancing connectivity between two growing communities, improving transport safety and enhancing residents' quality of life by proactively making enhancements that encourage active travel.
